Conquer Self

Napoleon Hill said this today in the closing segment of his classic book, Think & Grow Rich

Two words jumped out at me –

conquer self!

In that moment I realized that that is what this process of self-help (or personal development) is all about – a conquering of oneself.

Recognize the fact that you, and every other human being, are, by nature, lazy, indifferent, and susceptible to all suggestions which harmonize with your weaknesses. ~ Napoleon Hill

And that’s why it’s so damn hard. That’s why every fiber in our being seems to work against our betterment. It goes against every inclination that comes naturally. It’s why almost nobody follows through on a self-improvement program for any length of time.

But –

If you do not conquer self, you will be conquered by self. ~ Napoleon Hill

And there’s the rub.

Ironic, isn’t it? To help oneself one must first conquer oneself.
